Charlotte Bobcats Call for a Double Team of Game Face Academy Graduates

Melissa Pelham and Gregg AllenPORTLAND, OREGON —Game Face Sports Career Training Camp attendees Gregg Allen and Melissa Pelham have been placed into full-time positions with the Charlotte Bobcats of the National Basketball Association. Both Allen and Pelham graduated with sports-related degrees from highly respected institutions and pursued full-time opportunities with sports teams before exploring Game Face. After completing the Training Camp, they each received job offers within two days.

Season ticket sales manager Jacob Reid, one of four Game Face Training Camp participants already on the Bobcats’ staff, played a major role in the hiring process. “I’ve experienced first-hand the benefits of Game Face training and the Training Camp experience, and it put me a step ahead of others who entered the industry at the same time,” said Reid. “Now that I’m on the other side of the fence, I recognize the value of the training these candidates bring with them. The project prepares them well and they understand what to expect from the first day, and we’ve seen Gregg and Melissa step in ready to go to work.”

Allen grew up in Barre, Vermont and studied sport management at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. As an intern, he sold sponsorships for the Vermont Frost Heaves of the ABA during their inaugural season in 2006, and developed a desire to continue within the discipline of sports sales. At the recommendation of Frost Heaves Owner Alexander Wolff, Allen sought out Game Face. “I’m passionate about building a long-term career in sports, and in order to do that it’s necessary to learn from the best in the business,” said Allen. “The Training Camp provided the opportunity to receive training and develop skills to complement the experiences I had gained previously. Basketball is my first love, so I jumped at the chance to work in the NBA and I’m extremely happy with my decision to work for the Bobcats with their great front office culture.”

Pelham completed a business administration degree with a concentration in sports business from the University of Oregon. During an informational interview with an executive from a NFL team, she was encouraged to consider attending the Training Camp as a vehicle to kick-start her career and accelerate her progression. “Breaking in to the sports industry is definitely challenging, but I was committed to making it happen,” said Pelham. “The Training Camp presented the best option for me to obtain the job I wanted, and needless to say the process moved a lot faster than I anticipated! The Bobcats have created a great environment to work in, and that has helped make the transition to the East Coast relatively smooth.”
